Skandia pulls out of 14 years of Cowes Week Sponsorship
Skandia Cowes Week next year will be just Cowes Week unless another title sponsor can be found although the organising committee, Cowes Combined Clubs CCC are confident they can attract another sponsor to take over.
In the 181 year history of the event there has only been a sponsor for 15 of those years. The event needs the £1.5 million pound that Skandia put in for fourteen years and could do with more to improve the infrastructure.
Skandia is sponsoring the Royal Yacht Association’s Olympic campaign until 2008 with an option to 2012 as a new sponsorship.
If CCC does not find a sponsor, the ten yacht clubs from the Isle of Wight and the mainland that comprise it may approach local government for funding as the event brings in £60 million a year to the local area.
Cowes week is such an important part of the calendar competitively and socially that it is difficult to imagine a summer without the event so the next few months of negotiations and presentations by CCC are crucial for Cowes Week’s long term survival.
