Rolex Fastnet Race threatened by severe weather - The Royal Ocean Racing Club Meets
The Royal Ocean Racing Club are in emergency session to discuss options for the 2007 Rolex Fastnet Race after the Met Office predicted severe weather that will hit the fleet about the time the bigger yachts have turned from Fastnet and are heading for the Isles of Scilly. Most of the 300 fleet would not have reached Fastnet Rock.
In the 1979 Fastnet Race high winds and big seas devastated the fleet causing loss of several yachts and the deaths of 15 competitors. The RORC instituted a number of rule changes to increase safety aspects of the race after 1979.
The options for the RORC officers are to go ahead on Sunday 12th as planned (unlikely given 1979), postpone for a day (likely start on Monday), or to abandon (probably the least liked option by the competitors).
