Ian Sutherland gets good results at Youth Laser Radial World Championship
The five sailor Vanguard/US Sailing Laser Radial Youth World Team attended the 2007 Laser Radial Youth World Championship in Scheveningen, The Netherlands.
The US sailors were selected by US Sailing on their individual rankings on the Laser Radical Grand Prix in 2006 and were sponsored by Vanguard Sailboats: Philip Crain of Houston, Texas; Justin Doane of Nokomis, Fla.; Colin Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Jerry Tullo of Staten Island, N.Y.; and Ian Sutherland of Toms River, N.J.
While the five top US youth sailors were sent to the event the field was 270 sailors from 32 countries many of whom were more familiar with sailing in fast currents, chaotic waves, deep water and large competitive fleets.
Over 200 boats were split into separate male and female fleets in three colours: gold, silver and bronze where in gold Tullo and Sutherland finished 44th and 59th respectively and in silver Smith, Crain and Doane finished 8th, 10th and 21st respectively.
