Luxury sightseeing boat may have sailed to close to the glacier
Passengers and the captain of a luxury sightseeing boat Alexey Maryshev were being interviewed after some passengers were alleged injured by ice that fell from a glacier in the Artic region of the Svalbard islands, 300 miles north of Norway.
Local authorities in Svalbard have launched an investigation into the incident.
Seven British tourists were thought to be injured. None of the injuries were thought to be life threatening.
Initially injured were sent to Longyearbyen on the Svalbard island of Spitsbergen. Three Britons and a Russian were later transferred to University Hospital, Tromso, on the Norwegian mainland with more serious injuries. Relatives of the injured had been informed.
Concerns were expressed that the captain could have sailed the boat too close to the glacier. Large chunks of the glacier ice cliff might have broken off and collapsed into the sea causing ice and water to wash onto the deck and injure the tourists.
46 Britons paid around 2500 Pound for the âexpedition voyageâ with Discover the World. Discover the World spokesperson Clive Stacey did not rule out the ship being too close to the glacier and added the captain has strict instructions on that sort of thing.
Built in Finland in 1990 as a hydrographic research vessel the Alexey Maryshev was converted to passenger use in the Netherlands by Oceanwide Expeditions in a long-term contract for its usage.
